Biography
Giovanna Rincón, born in 1969 in Bogotá, Colombia, is a transgender activist renowned for her commitment to the rights of trans, migrant, sex worker and HIV-positive people. Born into a poor and difficult family, she asserted her feminine identity from an early age, despite an often hostile environment. After going through difficult times, including a transition put on hold due to rejection by family and lovers, she discovered she was HIV-positive at the age of 20.
Which could have discouraged her but, on the contrary, strengthened her resolve to fight.
In 1993, she emigrated to Italy, where she endured racism, transphobia and violence, while campaigning for the rights of trans women in prostitution. Faced with the difficulties associated with her situation as an undocumented migrant, she became involved in associations defending the rights of prostitutes. In 2002, she settled permanently in Paris, where she continued her fight against transphobia and discrimination.
In 2010, she co-founded the association Acceptess-T, which supports trans people in difficulty, particularly migrants, sex workers and HIV-positive people, offering them linguistic, social and legal support. Under her leadership, the association became a key player in the emancipation and defense of the fundamental rights of trans women. Giovanna Rincón has been recognized for her courage, tenacity and commitment to equality.
