Biography
Performance artist, choreographer, and anthropologist from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Mexico. Lukas is a muxe, a third-gender identity from the Zapotec people, predating colonization and Christianity.
Avendaño has received numerous awards and recognitions. In 2020, he won the Prize for Indigenous Identity at FICWALMAPU in Temuco, Chile. In 2019, he received the Fundación Threshold Award in Canada/USA and an honourable mention at the 5th International Performing Arts Exhibition, Movimiento Continuo, in Bogotá, Colombia. In 2017, he won the Audience Award at the Zürcher Theater Spektakel in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2011, he was granted the FONCA Jóvenes Creadores “A” scholarship. In 2002, he was recognized for his community work with the National Youth Award by the SEP-SEGOB-STPS-SRA-Senate of the Republic (LVIII Legislature).
